At Cultio, we work hand in hand with local farmers to deliver premium, disease-resistant coffee varieties perfectly adapted to Kenya’s diverse growing conditions. Our two main varieties — Batian and Ruiru 11 — are renowned for their outstanding performance in both smallholder and estate settings.
Our certified planting material is sourced from the Coffee Research Institute (CRI) — Kenya’s authority in coffee breeding and improvement. Through CRI’s rigorous research and quality control, we provide farmers with high-yielding, resilient, and true-to-type seedlings that deliver exceptional cup quality and ensure sustainable returns season after season.
Our Coffee Varieties
Batian
Batian is a tall, high-yielding coffee variety known for its exceptional cup quality and strong resistance to Coffee Leaf Rust and Coffee Berry Disease. Released in 2010, it has become a preferred choice for Kenyan farmers due to its adaptability, consistent yields, and ability to perform well even under low management.
Thriving in medium to high-altitude regions, Batian is best planted at a density of 800–1,200 plants per acre with multiple-stem pruning, offering a high cherry-to-bean outturn and excellent returns for both smallholders and estates.
Ruiru 11
Ruiru 11 is a compact, high-yielding hybrid variety bred to withstand Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and Coffee Leaf Rust. Released in 1985, it was created to help farmers recover from the devastating CBD epidemic of the late 1960s. Ruiru 11 is highly valued for its disease resistance, excellent cup quality, and space-efficient growth, making it ideal for intensive farming systems.
It thrives across diverse Kenyan coffee zones and performs best when planted at a density of 800–1,200 plants per acre with multiple-stem pruning, delivering high yields and consistent performance for both smallholder and estate farmers.
